USF students protest budget-cutting diversity

Around 200 USF students marched on campus on Tuesday, carrying signs and shouting the mantra "Rise up!" to protest the affects of the university's budget cuts may have on the Africana, Women's and Latin and Caribbean studies programs.

The march took students from the rally held at MLK plaza, to students waiting at Cooper Hall to join the march and back to administration where Provost Wilcox was demanded to give straight answers to tough questions.

Students tried to stay calm, but passions were high as they wanted a confirmation on record from Wilcox that the administration at USF held diversity high on their priority list - in times of budget cuts as well as when touting statistics to attract funding and new students.

Wilcox reiterated several times that there would be no cuts to the departments and they would retain academic autonomy, but balancing the budget may require departments to consolidate. Several protesters said that a consolidation would dilute the power of the department - even demote them to programs, which would take clout form already marginalized minority studies.

Ybor Film Fest of the Moving Image brings meaningful cinema to Tampa

The sixth annual Ybor Film Festival of the Moving Image was held last weekend, but unlike most festivals that tout a larger audience than last year and hint at Hollywood ties, the small festival held at Hillsborough Community College is proud not of clout, but its mission of bringing important cinema to Ybor.

N.I.T.E. Walk Engages Students in Own Safety

On Monday, Student Senate Pro Tempore Nicole Rendazzo coordinated the N.I.T.E. Walk between SG and the student group known as N.I.T.E.: Necessary Improvements to Transform our Environment. Once a semester for the past two years, students meet, eat pizza and walk the entire campus to identify safety concerns.

President Genshaft signs commitment to make USF more green

Drinking fair trade coffee, surrounded by vendors selling solutions to living more sustainably everyday and talking to a co-founder of the Tampa bike co-op, it is easy to feel that there is a new emphasis on living green at USF and in Tampa.

N.I.T.E. tells students to Take Back the Night

The student organization N.I.T.E. held the second annual Take Back the Night rally, where students were encouraged to take a stand against rape and domestic violence.

Students heard from speakers from USF athletics, USF advocacy program, The Spring of Tampa Bay and University Police. During the Speak-Out, a special speaker told of her personal experience with abuse and encouraged other students to tell their own stories for awareness and healing.

Senate votes for own incentives

With only a third of senators showing up for their student senate meeting Tuesday night, the case was made for measures to attract and retain students to conduct the university business.

After a lengthy debate, a statute was voted on and passed by a narrow margin to authorize an incentive for student senators to participate actively in the role they were elected. It authorized them to be paid.
