Friday marked the ninth year of WiLD 98.7 FM’s highly-anticipated fall concert at Tropicana Field. The concert was filled with big chains, screaming fans, and a full lineup of talented rap artists.
Fans at this year's show were treated to performances by Fabolous featuring the Dream, Plies, Hurricane Chris, LL Cool J, Three 6 Mafia featuring Project Pat, and Lil Wayne. To get the crowd excited, 2 Pistols, Flo-Rida and Swizz Beatz featuring Cassidy opened the show.
Fabolous featuring the Dream caught everyone’s attention as they performed the recent hit “Make Me Better.” Since TI (the show's original headliner) could not perform due to a recent arrest, Fabolous rapped to TI’s “Big Thangs Poppin.” He ended his performance with the crowd-pleaser “Breathe.”
Ft. Myers native Plies gets the award for the most memorable moment of the evening. After rapping to Akon and Eminem’s “Smack That,” he gave $1000 to a young lady who has a loved one currently in jail.
Hurricane Chris jumped on stage next and had the loudest music yet. He asked for the future millionaires to put their hands up and had the most energy when he sang his single “Hand Clap.” To watch him perform was a treat because he was genuinely excited to be there, and it showed on his face when he saw fans singing along to his music.
Anyone who was a fan of LL Cool J in the 1990’s would be sad to have missed his 45-minute performance. It is almost like he never left the rap scene. Hearts started racing as LL's microphone, embellished with the rapper's name, was placed in the center of the stage.
LL gave out a dozen roses to his female fans and allowed nearly 100 screaming girls the chance to dance on the stage. As a happily married husband, he made sure to not let the girls get too close.
After asking for the fans to pull out their cell phones, LL shouted out to those seated in the nose-bleed section. He was the first performer that got everyone on their feet. Security wasn’t even concerned with the fans trying to push to the front.
“We love bringing the South to the South!” was shouted as There 6 Mafia featuring Project Pat took the stage. As soon as the beat for “Dope Boy Fresh” began, they had their fans hypnotized. Three 6 Mafia's set included their biggest hits, but was mainly geared toward their die-hard fans.
Lil Wayne returned to the Last Damn Show for the second year in a row. This year he had the opportunity to headline the show after TI had to withdraw from the lineup. Security could not control the rush to the front so they just let the fans go.
Before Lil Wayne started his set, he gave the fans two minutes to take as many pictures as they could. After striking crazy poses, he free styled for 10 minutes. How could anyone have gone on after him?
Obviously the fan favorite, as soon as Lil Wayne said, “Look up cuz the sky is the limit,” many of WiLD’s DJ’s took a spot on the stage to watch him perform.
Many fans left the concert with no voice, and that was the mark of a great experience for those already anticipating Last Damn Show 10.
